    a great printer

    by kjrumz

    Pros: fast

I purchased my DocuPrint P8 a year and a half ago and have been very pleased. It is much more compact and less expensive than many other laser printers. It is takes up approximately the same amount of space as many ink jet printers and prints in a fraction of the time. I generally have my printer set to have the paper feed come up out of the printer to help conserve space, although if you are printing labels or thick paper, there is a switch to set the paper to come out flat. It is extremely easy to use and the ink cartridges are simple to change. The only problem that I've ever had with the printer was that it started printing thick lines down the center of the page which later changed to a total lack of ink. However, this problem was fixed when I was able to clean the dust out of it. It seems that my college dorm room floor wasnt the best place to keep it. I definitely recommend this printer for a home, but based on the dust problem I only recommend it for a dorm room if there is ample space to set it on the desk and ensure it will be taken good care of.

Does the Job... Quickly and Quietly

Pros: Good graphic quality, good speed, quiet, great price

After my Mita DP-560 broke another toner unit (running $89 a pop), I decided it was time to look into another laser printer. I checked out all the online auctions and managed a winning bid from At $139 plus shipping it was definitely a steal. While some inkjets can be found in the $50 range, the speed can become irritatingly slow when printing large and/or important documents.

Print speed is about on par with the manufacturer's claims of 8ppm (thus the name "P8". Unlike my previous Mita laser printer, the Xerox requires no warm-up, dramatically increasing real world performance. Xerox claims 1800x600 dpi (using image enhancement, whatever that means) but I find graphic quality no better or worse than other 600x600 dpi lasers. Paper jams are rare or non-existent and the paper path is a relatively straight one. The P8 is definitely one of the quieter printers I've used, even for a laser printer.

Although I have never used it, the Xerox P8 has twin printer ports so two PCs can be connected to the printer at a time, a feature rarely found on an entry level laser. I dual boot with Red Hat Linux and was dissapointed to find this was a Win only printer. Perhaps in the future Xerox will release Linux drivers, but don't expect third party drivers in the meantime.

If you are a casual home user or have a small office and are looking for a name-brand entry level laser printer I highly recommend the Xerox DocuPrint P8.
